This popular bar snack is always a hit when you’re looking to make a tasty treat at home and with the addition of Spicy Red BBQ Sauce the flavor gets amped up. This recipe is a better, preservative-free alternative and super easy to make at half the price when you do it yourself. Smoked nuts make excellent gifts to give friends, family and neighbors and if you are socializing over a cocktail before dinner or having the guys over to watch the game, everyone loves to grab a handful of nuts to munch on. There are numerous nuts, such as pecans and almonds that work well with this recipe but our family likes having a variety of mixed nuts to keep it interesting. Costco sells a 40 oz canister of ‘Extra Fancy’ Mixed Nuts that I typically like to use. We’ve come to enjoy these due to their size and quality so this is what we’ve stuck with. The final outcome is a savory, salty, smoky nut that has a little crunch from being roasted. Serve warm. Note: Yes, these can be made in your home oven if you don’t wish to smoke or grill them.

Smoked Spicy Pecans (or Mixed Nuts)

These smoked nuts pack a hint of heat and are the snack you didn’t know you were missing. Perfect for game day, cocktails, or just snacking straight off the pit.

Equipment

  • Smoker or grill

  • Aluminum ½ pan (or sheet pan)

  • Quart-size Ziplock bag

Ingredients

  • 4 ounce Pecans (or mixed nuts)

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

  • 1 tbsp Spicy Red BBQ Sauce

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (L&P)

  • 1 tsp seasoned salt (Lowry’s)

Directions

  1. Preheat your smoker or grill to 250–275°F. If using a grill, set it up for indirect heat.

  2. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, Spicy Red BBQ Sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and seasoned salt. Stir until fully mixed.

  3. Place the nuts into a quart-size Ziplock bag.

  4. Pour the butter mixture into the bag with the nuts. Seal the bag and gently massage until all nuts are evenly coated.

  5. Using a fork or knife, poke several small holes in the bottom of the aluminum pan to allow smoke circulation.

  6. Pour the coated nuts into the pan and spread them out in a thin, even layer.

  7. Place the pan in the smoker or on the indirect heat side of the grill. Smoke for 30–45 minutes, stirring every 5–7 minutes to prevent scorching and ensure even cooking.

  8. The nuts are done when they transition from soft to lightly crunchy and snap cleanly when bitten.

  9. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

  10. Store in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.
